How to Protest your Property Taxes
April 16, 2018
It’s that time of the year again! Last year, we wrote an article about understanding your property taxes and how to protest them. Since this is a yearly event, we have decided to inform you about this topic once again. Each year, appraisal districts appraise all properties for taxation purposes as of January 1st of that year. HCAD has begun sending out reappraisal notices for real property in the past few weeks. If you haven’t received yours yet, you likely will soon. If you feel your values are higher than the market or higher than other comparable properties are assessed, then you should protest the valuation. Property tax protest deadline is May 15, 2018!
You can do the protest yourself or you can hire one of the many services that specialize in this (generally for 30-50% of the savings). We are a strong believer in the do-it-yourself approach and there are studies that suggest that those who use the DIY approach see larger reductions. Either way, it is very important that you understand the process of protesting for your home and how-to, so you can make an informed decision.
Click here to read an article we shared with you last year on how to protest your property taxes. It does a great job of explaining the process and options, so we are sharing it with our readers again this year. The Harris County Appraisal District also has some very good information.
